After seven years of wedding photography, I feel like I’ve seen it all…then I photograph another wedding and realize I haven’t seen anything! The beautiful part of my job is the uniqueness of each celebration. But with the individuality comes surprises – sometimes little, sometimes big, always unexpected.
I’ve waited with an anxious groom-to-be when his future wife was 45 minutes late arriving at the church. I’ve walked into a reception venue to see the couples’ names misspelled on the marquee. I’ve taken pictures in the shelter of a garage because a storm was raging outside. I’ve watched cakes fall apart and flowers show up wilted. I’ve seen tears when the couple realized they forgot to apply for their marriage license and anger when the trolley driver disappeared for a smoke break at exactly the wrong moment.
Each one of those incidents could stress out a bride and groom, making their day miserable. Or it could be just another anecdote to an unforgettable, wonderful, happy occasion. I vote for the second option.
In my opinion, you only really need four things to make your wedding work – your fiancée, a minister, a witness (or two), and a photographer! Everything else is gravy. Sometimes it’s hard to relax and let the details play out in their own way, especially when it’s not how you pictured things. But years down the road, it’s the emotions that you’ll remember the most. Don’t let those emotions be frustration and regret. Your wedding day is a celebration uniting you with the love of your life. As long as that happens, nothing should bring you down!
